Objectives of frontal lectures
The immune system has the main function of defending the individual from all pathogens and protecting the development of infectious diseases. However, it can also mediate aggression towards own tissues and organs (autoimmune diseases and hypersensitivity reactions) and can represent a barrier to a successful transplant. The course aims at clarifying the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlay the proper functioning of the immune system. This knowledge is fundamental to any intervention and/or manipulation of it for therapeutic purposes.

Objectives of integrative activity
Integrative activity will allow students to learn some of most common techniques and assays applied in an immunology laboratory.

The student will acquire the ability to integrate knowledge acquired in the previous basic science courses with biological mechanisms of defense and pathological conditions of immune system.

At the end of the course students should demonstrate to know:

  • - the biological mechanisms of the immune system in health and disease;
  • - the relationship between microorganisms and host in human infections;
  • - mechanisms of immune defense;
  • - the biotechnology bases of new drugs based on recombinant cytokines, their inhibitors, genetic manipulation of immune response;
  • - vaccines against common infections and strategies for innovative vaccines.

The Course is organized in 48 hours, including 44 hours of lectures for all students and 4 hours of integrative activity.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento

The examination is a written test. After the script, the student could see the test and discuss with the teacher to clarify the part of the program that have to be completed to pass the exam. The examination consists in a 63 questions quiz with multiple choice answers. Wrong answer or not given is worth 0 points. Right answer is worth 1 point. The rating is expressed in thirtieths. The mark of written exam could be integrated with additional 1 point that will be obtained based on a ten free-answer questions about laboratory activity, which will be eventually administered at the end of the integrative activity. The mark obtained with the integrative activity can be spent exclusively during the academic year in which the student attends the Immunology course.
