How the course is organized:
A.The students are supposed to prepare a 20 min presentation about some aspects of Germinal Center immune response using the supplied bibliography;
B.The students are supposed to interact and discuss the various presentations during the lessons; if they miss some lessons, these topics will be discussed during the exam section.

B cells: Origin, morphology and functions of B cells; Structure of antibodies and their biological function; Classes of immunoglobulins; The Fc region and the Fc Receptor (FcR).
B Follicular Cells: T cell dependent immune response; three major classes of B antigens: T-dependent antigens (TDs), T-independent antigens (TI-1 and TI-2); cognate and non-cognate signals.
T cells and Memory T Cell: Origin, morphology and functions of T cells; Education, activation and programming; Chemokines: regulators of development, trafficking and functions.
T Follicular Cells: The T cells subsets (Th1, Th2, Th9, Th17, Th22, Treg, Tr1, Tgd, NKT); T follicular helper cells: differentiation and functions; Role of TFH cells in health and disease.
Somatic Hypermutation: Role of activation-induced cytidine deaminase enzyme (AID); CD40L-CD40 interactions; Affinity maturation.
Class Switching: The switch recombination and AID enzyme; the importance of switch regions; the cytokines that influence the isotype switching; subsets of antibodies.
Memory B Cells and Plasma cells: Memory B cells: general characteristics; activation of B cells in secondary responses; mechanism of antibody synthesis; short-lived plasma cells (Bcl-6); long-lived plasma cells (IL-2 and IL-10).
Follicular Dendritic Cells: The antigen-antibody complexes (immune complexes); the antigen-antibody-complement complexes; Esosomes and Iccosomes.
The Germinal Center Reaction: dark zone, light zone and mantle zone; the tingible body macrophages; the functions of high endothelial venules (HEV); centroblasts and centocytes; lymphocyte trafficking.
